@Loukas there is a good read called which makes the same case to allow to regenerate dried out and destroyed ecosystems. The only thing stopping the unleashing of this natural force is the ecological industry who would lose if that were to happen. Kind of like the police and fire departments.

Beaverland is the NYPL Book of the Day. (H/T spouse). I would not have known as I don't go on twitter.
"In 'Beaverland: How One Weird Rodent Made America' by @theleilaphilip
, Philip follows fur trappers, traders, auctioneers, wildlife managers, PETA activists, Native American environmental vigilantes, scientists, and engineers."

I’m reading by @leilaphilip and am falling in love with the rodents. Leila is brutally concise with the facts and beautifully prosaic with stories and their behavior. I’m on page 22 and already in the water with them. So far and in one sentence: The book is dam good.

@LGsMom don't live in their dams. They live in lodges. I read once that beavers can let out enough water through their dams though to create a nice air space under the ice in winter. Their lodges must be porous enough to allow for air flow. The best books about beavers are by Ben Goldfarb, the new book by Leila Phillip, and books written by Frances Backhouse. Also I am very fond of the book Paddy by R.D. Lawrence.

In , Scott McGill says, "What we actually found...is that the pond created cold-water refugia in the center. If I am a maybe I don't like the beaver canals and shallow areas in July and August, but in spring and fall the food availability is of a different magnitude here than in a single-channel stream. And in a beaver pond you can go deep and not get eaten by a blue heron."

Actually, Leila Phillip talks about the impact of on in :

"One of the myths about beavers is that they negatively impact trout. Trout is big business, with historically strong support, and the removal of dams and the trapping of beavers to protect trout has been standard policy for most departments ever since beavers returned in the early twentieth century."

@Iragersh Beavers can chew through plastic. Cages need to be wire mesh (not chicken wire), staked into the ground so the don’t just lift them up, and four feet high or higher (depending on snowfall).

So the Bay is such an interesting example of a in need of help. The pollution is so bad there that the EPA has it under a Total Maximum Daily Load or TMDL: epa.gov/chesapeake-bay-tmdl

From : "the Chesapeake is the largest watershed on the Atlantic seaboard, intersected by over a hundred and thousands of . And every drop of that falls in the watershed...finds its way into the Chesapeake Bay.

THREAD: More thoughts about Leila Phillip's book . I made it to chapter 13, where Phillip meets up with Scott McGill at Long Green Creek within the Bay . McGill owns an restoration company called Ecotone.

He is one of the founders and sponsors of and I attended many a zoom with him while serving on the planning committee for the 2022 conference.

One of the things I really enjoyed about by Leila Phillip is that she examines how people viewed prior to European settlement.

In this interview, Phillip details her findings: PHILIP: Yeah. It's interesting because in woodland cultures, the beaver's depicted as rather mischievous because there were a lot of beavers. But in the Black Teeth nation, you know, there were prohibitions against harming beavers because it's an arid environment.”

And I started to think about what would happen to my , who we had named Cocoa and Brownie, and to their kits.

And I realized that I had to change the laws and policies of the entire state of to keep my beavers safe. Which is a perfectly rational conclusion to reach, right?

So I formed a nonprofit, the Illinois Beaver Alliance. I found a fiscal sponsor. I reached out to several "famous" beaver believers, who are in Eager and Leila Phillip's book .
