As a secondary thing I know that can be a challenging thing to deal with especially with new teachers.

One strategy I have had use with is the hidden positive behaviors. An example is to have 1 obvious behavior you are looking for but two "hidden" ones that you are looking for. They could be anything; they started taking notes in class without prompt, they brought all their supplies, they worked on task with a partner, etc. And you use whatever positive reward system you want to reward them without saying anything (extra credit, candy, school store points, etc.)

A second strategy that I have had good luck with is positive calls home. It seems small and yes it can be time consuming but if you can try to call parents, particularly with difficult students, to compliment them on positive things that their child has done. I've done this and been told that the parent has NEVER been told something positive about their child by a teacher and it did help to build relationships with students. It doesn't work all the time (some students are genuinely manipulative and you need to be mindful of that) but it's helped me more than it has hurt.

Interesting article about human in public places. A lot of blame is placed on the , but I have to wonder how accurate that is. Disruption at for example was an issue well before the pandemic with people using their at full brightness.

A fun read. The last 3 paragraphs are insightful.

And somewhere in the middle he talks about the best and worst foods... so interesting!

A new study has found a more effective way to coach and inspire people, using a technique called motivational interviewing. This method involves asking open-ended questions, listening empathically, and affirming the person’s strengths and values. The study showed that this approach can improve people’s motivation, confidence, and behavior change, compared to other forms of coaching. news-medical.net/news/20230804

"Turner also studied birds, aquatic crustaceans, lizards and snakes, but he was particularly interested in the minds of insects. He cataloged surprising capacities for learning, memory, problem-solving — and possibly even emotions, says Chittka — in ants, bees, moths, cockroaches and other insects, anticipating perspectives that only reemerged in the 2000s." knowablemagazine.org/article/l

Greater academic pressure in high-socioeconomic status (SES) communities may amplify the negative effects of an ADHD diagnosis/mental health stigma. Children diagnosed and medicated for ADHD from high-SES but not low-SES families show poorer school behavior and self-esteem than undiagnosed peers.

Play-like behaviour in flies, tested by presenting a carousel and observing its use and avoidance. The authors suggest play-like behaviour enhances perception of the self, thereby improving, ultimately, fitness.
