Four out of five emperor penguin colonies in the #Bellingshausen #Sea, #Antarctica experienced #breeding #failure in spring 2022 due to #unprecedented sea #ice #loss, according to an analysis of satellite images over 2018–2022.

Η έκταση των θαλάσσιων πάγων στην Ανταρκτική βρίσκεται σήμερα στο χαμηλότερο επίπεδο από την έναρξη των δορυφορικών παρατηρήσεων πριν από 40 χρόνια. Στις αρχές Φεβρουαρίου, μόνο 2,20 εκατομμύρια τετραγωνικά χιλιόμετρα του Νότιου Ωκεανού ήταν καλυμμένα με #θαλάσσιο πάγο.
Η τρέχουσα ομάδα αποστολής στο ερευνητικό παγοθραυστικό #Polarstern αναφέρει επίσης συνθήκες σχεδόν χωρίς πάγο στη Θάλασσα #Bellingshausen.
