STORIES OF THE COAST…
Yeah, she thinks as she leans on the railing, not much doing today. Flat. Peoples’ boards litter the beach rather than skim down the swells. A couple have decided that the day is better spent reclining on their boards on the sand rather than in the sea.

More like a lake than one of Australia’s prime southern coast surfing venues, a place where competitions have shot both locals and visitors to fame, a place not all that far from where a couple surfers back in the seventies thought they could make a go of a small surf equipment company they had started in town nearby. Their little business grew some over the decades after they had the bright idea of starting it. They called it Rip Curl.

She looks out onto the waters of Bass Strait from Torquay’s Bells Beach, watches awile, then turns and walks back to her van. Time to go find a coffee in town, she says to herself. This is how it is on flat days at Bells Beach when there is not much doing.
