The worst thing about breaking up the Bell System in 1983 (AT&T) was it created the entire telephone spam / scammer industry.
@thanosengine This sounds super cool!
You may be aware of this, but @SDF has a private (as in not connected to PSTN) but open VOIP SIP network, and there's a fair bit of interesting old gear attached to it.
Not sure how up-to-date this page is, but it's a start:

Before the widespread deployment and implementation of 911 in the United States the Bell Telephone company assigned a key word to east state police office.
In Minnesota you could dial ZERO for an operator and ask for Zenith 7000 and be transferred to the local state patrol office free of charge.
If you know your key word for your area post it below.

Before accepting the consent decree to be broken up AT&T and the Bell System employed over one million people.
It is my belief that CEO Brown accepted the "deal" in order to shed its single biggest cost liability, wages.
He knew that digital switching along with optical transport was just around the corner and a large percentage of these employees would no longer be needed.
I offer equal time for an opposing view.

#2600 hertz (2600 Hz) is a frequency in hertz (cycles per second) that was used by #AT&T as a steady signal to mark currently unused long-distance telephone lines.
During the 1960s, in-band signaling was used, so the same line for both voice conversations and telephone connection management signals. The solution AT&T created was to produce a 2600 Hz tone on idle trunks.
