Koll Wetlands this afternoon - above, kingfishers sporting and rattling in the sky; strewn across the reflective pond surface, a score of sedate Pied-billed Grebes with a few of their young; rippling beneath the water and rolling to rise, a pair of river otters at play. After a rather antsy and restless afternoon, this helped.

Both the male and female #BeltedKingfisher at our local park in a rare shit together.

Whenever we have another winter storm warning just when it seemed like spring, I remember the seeming indignation of this queenfisher I spotted a couple of months ago*, diving down for a fish and finding ice. (Sound up to learn a little salty language in #BeltedKingfisher.)

I spent half an hour trying to see the Belted Kingfisher near the dam at Lake Frank today, but I never even caught a glimpse. Later, at Redgate Park, I saw two. Unlike sparrows and warblers, it's hard to mistake a Belted Kingfisher for any other bird.

I know I shouldn't anthropomorphize birds, but listen (volume up) to this queenfisher's call as she swoops down to catch a fish and tell me you can't hear her indignant protests when she realizes the fish are trapped under the ice.

I usually hear the belted kingfisher before I spot them. Their call is such a wildly eldritch, rattling laughter. They sound like they *know* things. I love to watch them study the water with their almost dancing resolution, suddenly diving headfirst, then emerging with their prize.

Sometimes I wonder if the kingfishers aren't really the sybilline butlers of the fairy kingdom, haunting the wetland portals to the other worlds.
