"To truly encourage appreciation and support for native , we need to shift people’s perspective. Instead of viewing lawns with wildflowers as unattractive or a sign of laziness, let’s celebrate the benefits they bring. It’s certainly easier, cheaper and probably safer to enjoy existing wildflowers than to go to the trouble of removing them with herbicides."

If you see these pupae on your brassica leaves - don't get rid of them. They are braconid wasp pupae - they parasitize cabbage loopers. I put them back in the arugula patch after taking the picture. This year I will try to grow sweet alyssum to feed the adult wasps.

Question: is it cute?

1) Yes, it’s totally adorbs!! 🥰
2) No, I’m a psychopath.

Answer in the comments bc it won’t let me post a pic and poll at the same time.

I had purchased (through the mail) a beautiful palm from Costa Farms, and had not done enough to isolate it before it came in contact with my home. The plant was absolutely infested with two spot spider mites, and I was new enough not to notice until the webbing was everywhere. I treated with as well as washed off plants, and trimmed off areas of heavy infestation. It was a real pain, but the new leaves are looking good so far. Lesson learned. Also, it was cool learning those beneficials were so tiny that they were unobtrusive. Expensive, but I would use again. I do not think they can handle an infestation alone though.

An update on larvae: They were voracious, and I have not had any aphid problems. They ran out of stuff to eat, and they cannibalized each other. The larvae were small enough that nobody noticed them unless I made a point of showing them. They liked to hide, and remained near plants. I never saw an adult, so they were either eaten by carnivorous plants or just flew outside when I was not looking. Absolutely worth the cost, and fun to watch if you are not skittish about bugs.

Bug hotel under construction. Will move down to garden before filling the compartments with bamboo tubes, pieces of oak with different size holes drilled in them, pine cones, etc.

The eggs are hatching, and the larvae are quite small (and yet easy to identify). At a normal magnification, most folks would not notice. When I use my new lens, I can see them more clearly. So far, I am genuinely enjoying the release of these in the and space. seem far easier to use than other methods. Now, let’s just see if they work!

I just put 5,000 Green Lacewing eggs and 5 million beneficial nematodes in the indoor plants. The idea is to enlist to do a bunch of work for me. I checked with an expert first, so these are ok to use like this and normal for my region (so they won’t escape and cause issues). It feels brilliant or unhinged or brilliantly unhinged. Let’s see how it plays out!

Getting the hang of taking photos with the microscope and focus stacking them to make a visual guide to dung beetles for NYSIPM.

File under awesome duties as assigned.

I did lurk around near the microscope hoping to help. Now the whole collection is in my care for a bit.
