For #Bentham, #hope is #social, for example there will be more hope to go around in a meritocratic social arrangement than an aristocratic one, even though individual hopes may result in disappointment. This applies directly to brexit, which has severely reduced the national supply of hope.

A lot of the intellectual churn on hope is of the ‘what is #hope?’ and ‘what ought we to hope for?’ variety. #Bentham has a better question, namely ‘Where is hope?’ This anticipates #Wittgenstein, because it means that hope takes on meaning in a context and stops being seen as a state of mind.

2022 has been the strangest year of my life in #research. I published an article in ‘#Psychoanalysis Culture & Society’, gave a talk about #Bentham in a London #pub, then spent the next nine months reading and rereading the same four pages of Bentham’s ‘Deontology’ that were the basis for the talk in the pub. I finished the first full draft of the article commenting on these four pages of Bentham yesterday and I am very pleased with the result.

The problem that #Bentham is tackling in his #Deontology, is not that the government makes you wear a seatbelt for the good of others but you would actually prefer to do your own thing, it is that the government makes you wear a seatbelt for the good of others but you still want to think of yourself as a good person.

I’ve been reading the same four pages of #Bentham’s ‘Deontology’ for nine months. Getting closure now.
