Perseus was one of the greatest and oldest pan-Hellenic heroes of Greek mythology. He famously slew the dreaded Medusa, a Gorgon with snakes as hair and whose gaze could turn men to stone. This exploit was swiftly followed by the daring rescue of the princess Andromeda from a monstrous sea-creature sent by Poseidon to terrorize the kingdom of Ethiopia.

The majority of great Renaissance works of art were produced in large and busy workshops run by a successful master artist and his team of assistants and apprentices. Here, too, more mundane art was produced in larger quantities to meet the demand from clients with a more modest budget than possessed by rulers and popes.
