Heatwave back with a vengeance & I’m spinning #InHotHouse by #BenWebster.
While not hugely familiar with Webster, this live set is a total riot. It’s not quite a sonic marvel, but the thing is alive with the chink of drinks glasses, the mumble of the audience, & the stomp of the musicians as they kick into gear.
& the musicianship is really top notch: it swings, it rocks, it snarls.

Jazztodon artist of the week: Ben Webster! According to our friends at @aaj, in 1940, #benwebster became the first major #tenorsax soloist for #dukeellington. He was on many famous recordings, including "Cotton Tail" and "All Too Soon." After leaving Ellington in 1943, Webster recorded frequently as both a leader and a sideman and toured with Jazz at the Philharmonic. Webster was one of the great ballad players in the history of jazz, and Norman Granz recorded him on many memorable sessions.

I'm listening to "The Art Tatum - Ben Webster Quartet" album, recorded in September 1956 and released on the Verve label in 1958.
Tatum on piano, Webster on tenor, Red Callender on bass, and Bill Douglass on drums.
The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings selected this album as part of its suggested “core collection” of essential recordings.
