This seems similar to my perception of #BeOS, #YellowTab #Zeta, and #Haiku over the years. While I saw their focus as being a user-focused GUI-centric system, what is the driving force behind BSD systems: servers, CLI-centric user systems, something else?

Michael MJD also published a video about @haiku|‘s successor #BeOS. You really need a #retromachine to use that. It also has a 2k11/time bug where you can get past the year 2010. That was new to me. Despite that it is quite astonishing how responsive this old #OperatingSystem runs on old hardware. If you’re interested, try #HaikuOS.

@jonn_blanchard Everything about the #Psion 5 is incredibly advanced for its time. The OS was developed from scratch, written entirely in C++, in 1996! There has only been 2 other commercial C++ OSes, ever -- #BeOS and Google's #Fuchsia

Some tech blast from the past... our digital signage runs #BeOS.

@digichelle A big thing in #BeOS is apps that take advantage of features in its rather forward thinking filesystem, which among other things allows arbitrary attributes on files that can optionally be indexed for systemwide searching. E.g., the address book is just a folder of files whose attributes describe contacts, and the rich text editor saves RTF into a file attribute while putting plain text into the regular data contents, so you can read text like usual from the command line.

Y’all, I did it. I got #BeOS 5.0.3 running in #86Box on my PC. I remember reading about it in the late 90s, but never got a chance to play around with it until now.

Is it everything I hoped it would be? Well, I still love the aesthetic, those isometric icons in particular. But I have a confession to make: I have no idea what to do with all this. Where should I start? What shouldn’t I miss?

(And yes, I fully intend on trying Haiku eventually.)

Back in the 90s there was real freedom and innovation.
We had much more than only 2 operating systems like today and every year another newcomer joined the stage.

One of them was #BeOS, a UI focused OS. Unfortunately it vanished, but with its
#opensource variant #HaikuOS, it's concepts survived.

And it uses #CPP in it's API layer which is quite unusual.
So I need to learn more about it!

Fun-fact: I found an old german magazine CD from 1999 when v4.0 was released.
Damn, I feel old ...
