The Aït Atta, however, disagree.

They insist that they're descendants of 16th-century 'Dada Atta', an associate of the great-grandson of prophet Muhammad.

Despite their emphatic claims, they can not trace their lineage further than ~4, purely patrilineal generations.

Today in Labor History April 20, 2001: Black Spring began in Algeria, after the police murdered Massinissa Guermah, a Berber Kabyle student. Black Spring was a series of protests and political demonstrations by Kabyle activists, which were met by repressive and violent police measures, including 126 deaths.

A Gentle Breeze

The town of Moulay Idris, about an hour from Meknes, is home to the zawiya of Moulay Idris I, the first in the line of the #Idrisid rulers. He himself was a political refugee of Arab descent from the #Mashriq, or Near East, and he established his authority in what is now central #Morocco by cultivating a good relationship with the local #Berber tribes.

The Idrisids founded #Fez, but the little town is still the place to go each August to witness the moussem, or celebration of Moulay Idris I as a saint of sorts.

I can't show pictures of what it looks like inside the mosque or tomb buildings, but I can tell you that as I sat near the tomb and listened to those around me chant wirds (long #Sufi prayers), the faintest and most delightful of cool breezes wafted around the large chamber. I myself am not #Sufi but I believe that #Allah SWT honored my visit with this lovely gift.

I shared some Andalusi #music the last time #Libya 🇱🇾 came up. This time we're going #Touareg (also #Tuareg, #Tawarek, etc.). The Touareg are traditionally groups of semi-nomadic pastoralists from the central #Sahara. They were eventually colonised by the French, however when many countries gained #independence the Touareg found that they were split up between half a dozen emerging nations, with them being a disadvantaged #minority, leading to various rebellions and conflicts concerning scarce resources and territorial disputes, including the quite recent 2nd Libyan civil war (2012-2020).
This is Tisnant An Chatma by Tamikrest. The #band formed in #Mali 🇲🇱, however such national borders do not really apply here. Tamikrest is #Tamasheq and means "crossing, junction", but also "future". They make #Desert #Blues, also known as Saharan or #Berber #Rock. I *love* this #genre for its #rhythm, #melody and overall #fusion and communal feel.

Addendum: The #Amazigh (AKA #Berber) people use a variant of the #JulianCalendar to date traditional festivals; in this calendar, #LeapDay is added to the last month rather than the second one. Amazigh in #Morocco and #Libya celebrate traditional New Year the day after those in #Algeria, where it is a national holiday.
