Yippee, I ! I've been writing about our local pub, the Brickmaker's Arms in , and the family who lived there in 1839 and for most of the century before that (long before it was a pub!). Would they have been thrilled or horrified to know what happened to their family home after they left?

Glorious, cold, misty morning on the Greenway in between and . The trees on the horizon form the boundary between fields that in 1839 were called Middle Close and Far Close, named for their position in relation to a farmstead now long gone.

Yay, first data for my (pretty bonus below!). Phase 1 focuses on the 1839 . Here's what I found: 69 dwellings (9 headed by women, 17 owner-occupied, 52 tenanted). V local: 30 householders born in , 28 in , 3 out of county. V agricultural: 19 farmers, 16 ag labs, 5 shoemakers, 5 labs, 2 carpenters, 1 each of rakemaker, hosier, linen weaver, maltster, baker, shopkeeper

Visited this week to look for folk from my of & found the Watson family (not the famous tennis-playing ones!). They farmed at what is now the Brickmakers Arms (terrible photo on the left) during the first half of the C19. Mary Watson married a wrong un called Abraham Lancaster & her bachelor brothers all looked out for her, leaving her everything in their wills, but making sure it was free of Abraham’s “intermeddling”

Having a Sunday, working through phase 1 of the study, which is a quick & dirty of each person who appears on the 1839 Tithe Apportionment of . This gorgeous 'house, shop & garden' belonged to Joseph Arch, a farmer who died in 1840, leaving the premises to his wife Elizabeth and daughter Ann. The (partly hidden) front window bottom right was the village butchers' shop for many years!

Google My Maps - Oldnall End properties - Google My Maps

It’s and I’m 2 weeks (ok, 8 years) into a of (now in and ) in . For my first mini project, I’ve been identifying all the plots in the 1839 and entering them on this Google Maps layer, with notes & (from today) photos. It’s a bit rough, but it’s starting to look like something! Any advice more than welcome :)

@SocOnePlaceStudies thank you so much! “My” hamlet is Oldnall End, which is now in and - I’m not sure yet exactly what its boundaries were, or how much of an identity it had outside tax and property transactions, but I’m looking forward to figuring it out! I can already see it’s going to be hard to stop at just one, but I will be strong :)
