#ChristianPetzold plays around with the idea of forced forgetfulness. It's concentration camp survivor Nelly who can't let go. After series of reconstructive surgery on her face, she finds her husband Johnny who sold her out, at Phoenix, a nightclub. But he doesn’t recognize her and asks her to pretend to be, uhm, Nelly, so he can get his presumed dead wife’s inheritance. #Phoenix is kind of inverted Vertigo this way. Out of love, she goes along. At first, it’s very hard to buy that a woman as striking as Hoss, would be unrecognizable to anyone despite the disfigurement. But it’s all game of pretend and we are in the conceit as well. Petzold's regular theme of identity plays a big role here. She literally loses her face, but she longs for her old self even though it’s impossible. The film perfectly builds up to its emotionally cathartic ending. Phoenix is a deeply moving, deeply satisfying film by an incredibly talented director at the top of his game. #BerlinerSchule

Paul deserts his squad at a roadside gas station & comes back home. His parents are on holiday in Italy, so the house is empty. Things get complicated when his older brother Max shows up w/his pretty Danish actress girlfriend, Lene. Paul lies about his AWOL status & develops an unhealthy obsession w/Lene. Stooped, sulking and completely inept in human interactions, Paul is not just another lost, wayward youth. There is something more dangerous hidden in his unmotivated actions. There is something missing in him. The post-Wall Germany's collective identity crisis & its angst is demonstrated by an unexplained, ominous explosion in the middle of the film, as they watch the plume of smoke rising in the distance from the roof in their quiet suburban town. No one knows what exactly happened. And no one believes the news media. Fragmented, distant & elliptical, Falscher Bekenner is a deeply disturbing film that lingers. It tells a story of Armin, an aimless teen from a middle-class household, who might be a terrorist in the making. He seems to be into mechanics & has a fascination for mechanical objects but not much else. Being a 3rd son in a German household, therefore exempt from the mandatory military service, isn't really helping him to get a headstart in life. He goes to job interviews only to get rejected, again & again. He lacks enthusiasm, focus, social skills & qualification. The interviewers absurd questions & methods are as troubling as Armin's withdrawal. Things are lucid. Did Armin actually committed the arson in his neighborhood? Is he engaging in dark sexual activities in the public bathroom at night? The thing is, because of Hochhäusler's precise, impeccable direction, you can't dismiss the boy's lethargic behavior as shallow characterization. #christophhochhäusler #BerlinerSchule

In My Room imagines the apocalypse where you might be the last man on earth & infinite choices living in the comfort of the post-advanced capitalism. You can choose his way, a city boy who seems to be enjoying being a self-made man & content being domestic or hers- trying to experience the world. The tragedy here, #UlrichKöhler seems to tell us, is that we have so many things to entertain ourselves with, companionship & loneliness take a backseat even at the world's end. #scifi #BerlinerSchule

There is something definitely missing in Deniz’s life. Her rootlessness is shown in many different occasions throughout the film. Arslan cleverly suggests through her being an actress, that she can or pretends to be any body. Whatever she is yearning for, she tries to find it in other people. Her gaze is not that of romantic gaze in Rohmer movies. Her gaze is searching kind, trying to find a stability, in a place, person, culture. #BerlinerSchule #ThomasArslan #germancinema #afineday

#ChristianPetzold ‘s #Gespenster is a great entry point to get into the world of #BerlinerSchule, the first major film movement since the heydays of New German Cinema of the 60s and 70s. Its cold & unforgiving atmosphere & lost people on the road, not from the romantic notion of wandering, but from the economic anxiety of the PostWall Germany, all embodied by Nina & Toni, yearning for Germany that has never materialized under neoliberal capitalism. It’s a deeply sad, affecting film. #juliahummer
