Berlioz wrote this after unsuccessfully trying to woo and English actress - she spoke no French, he no English, but he kept sending her letters and even got an apartment close to hers. He spent 3 years on it in his mid 20s. He couldn't get her to see the premier performance but 2 years later (so a total 5 years after he first met her) she finally DID come and see it and she fell in love. So!
