I’m #NowSpinning #SonnyRollins & The Contemporary Leaders from #Craft’s recent #GoWest boxset - an all analogue retrospective of the classic #WayOutWest.

This is new to me, but is as melodic & swings nearly as hard as its sister album. Rollins is on top form & the addition of #BarneyKessel on guitar distinguishes it from his other albums in my collection.

In terms of SQ, this is another #BernieGrundman cut & it matches Way Out West.

Taking a short break from Glastonbury & #GoWest, the latest commemorative boxset from #Craft has arrived. & so I’m #NowSpinning #WayOutWest by #SonnyRollins.

For me, this is a top ten #jazz album: immaculate musicianship, toe-tappingly catchy compositions, & so much fun.

This is a AAA cut by #BernieGrundman & it easily beats my ‘80s OJC. Whisper-quiet vinyl, detailed, with tons of dynamics. I’ll listen to the other disks over the next few days.

Home after a hard day at work & so, naturally, I’m #NowSpinning #Relaxin’ with the #MilesDavis Quintet.

This is cut by #KevinGray for the #Prestige series by #AnalogueProductions & it’s a really close call between this & the recent Craft Small Batch one step cut by #BernieGrundman. I’m glad to have both, & most times incline towards the Craft - but the AP is smoother - which suits the music on a night like this :)

Returned home after a week away & I’m #NowListening to #CharlesMingus Presents Charles Mingus.

This is a new addition to my collection & has everything you’d expect from #Mingus: the cacophonous swell of horns, irresistible swing, with more than a dash of quirk.

This is a repress by #Candid & it took me three attempts to get a flat, clean copy. But it’s cut by #BernieGrundman & sounds great with plenty of dynamics - it was worth persevering.

#NowListening to #ImWideAwakeItsMorning by #BrightEyes, the fourth offering included in this week’s #VinylMePlease bundle.

This is an album that I know well & love. I’ve other pressings with which to compare (incl. the 2005 #BernieGrundman cut). To my ears, the #VMP wins out: more dynamic with greater depth. The 2005 cut always struck me as a little flat.

The album itself is a modern classic imo - #FirstDayOfMyLife & #Lua are both stunningly good.

After the debacle of #MUFC’s humiliation, I’m consoling myself with an Old Fashioned & #MilesDavis. I’m #NowPlaying #KindOfBlue, one of the greatest albums of all time.

This is the #UHQR from #AnalogueProductions cut at 33 by #BernieGrundman. My copy, unfortunately, has a pressing defect on the the first 30 seconds of Blue In Green. Otherwise this is immaculate, stunning, & oh so moving - bested only by the UHQR at 45 (which I also have).

While this can’t match the cultural impact, I’d argue that this is a least equals Is This It in terms of songwriting. The Adults Are Talking, Brooklyn Bridge, Bad Decisions, & the marvellous Ode To The Mets… Banger after banger with driving riffs & hooks galore.

While I’m not a fan of the PVC (I assume) outer sleeve, the record is otherwise well done. Clean, punchy, & cut by #BernieGrundman.

Icy Tuesday evening & #NowListening to one of my favourite records in my collection: #Relaxin’ with the #MilesDavis Quintet.

This is the #Craft Small Batch Onestep mastered by #BernieGrundman. I did read some sniffy reviews, but, IMO, this just blows the OJC & the #AnalogueProductions reissues out of the water.

Tonally, it’s bang on - natural bass, the drums snap, & Miles soars, with just crazy, crazy dynamics. It really is something special.

As an aside, #Wilco show how boxsets & deluxe should be done. This - as with #BeingThere & #AM - was very reasonably priced, overstuffed with great content, well presented, well mastered, & well pressed. The 2020 reissue was mastered by #BernieGrundman.

Moving on from The Doors & #NowListening to #ArtBlackey & the Jazz Messengers #LiveInTokyo from the #TonePoet series. This is one of my favourite reissues from last year from one of my favourite ensembles: #WayneShorter, #BobbyTimmons, #JymieMerritt & the transcendent #LeeMorgan.

#BlueNote have again done a fantastic job with this, quality sleeve, booklet, clean flawless pressing, & dynamic mastering from #BernieGrundman. & the music incredible.

2LP set includes a full LP of outtakes. Lacquers were cut by Bernie Grundman. (If you're not familiar with #BernieGrundman, he's one of the best, especially with music from the 1960s and 1970s.)
