#BetterBoston admin announcement - we have silenced (but not blocked) mstdn.jp, following reports that they have not taken action on illegal content.

Due to how Mastodon is implemented, if we do not take action, our server will download and cache media files that it finds - therefore, action has been taken to prevent illegal content from being hosted (indirectly) by Better.Boston.

Several of our users follow people on mstdn.jp - you will still get the content from users you follow.

#BetterBoston folks, be sure to take note of this important announcement:

Planned Service Outage tonight, starting at 11:45 PM on 11/20/2022

Better.Boston will be offline for 15-60 minutes to move our database to a server that can handle long-term growth of our community.

We expect that this will be the only outage we will need for months - all other server upgrades that are planned can happen behind the scenes, with no downtime needed.

Our server has seen record numbers today. At 1:30pm EST, our server became backlogged and couldn't keep up with the number of posts that needed to be pulled from other servers.

This was noticed at 1:53pm, and we quickly used an idling server that was on standby to catch up on the backlog of posts (as soon as I got back from lunch)

The system fully caught up by 2:09pm EST, and seems to be back to full health.
