Buried near the bottom of this explainer from @BBCNews about GDP, is a brief mention of what is missing from the measure, and why it doesn't account for many of the things that matter.

It doesn't mention all the 'bads' that do get accounted for in GDP - including the financial impact of road traffic accidents etc.

It's on days like this that I remind myself to re-listen to Robert Kennedy's demolition of GNP/GDP in 1968.

Another day, another ridiculous fanfare on the BBC news headlines for a small rise in GDP - a figure which is entirely meaningless to the lives of real people.

In the UK, we have a country with just about all its public services in crisis, despite the best efforts of the workforc. Yet editors and journalists choose to spin a positive narrative about the supposed 'good news' that growth is returning.
