Got a question about #Windows #Server (currently 2022): Is there any way to configure a serial console?
Scenario leading to this question ... needed to reboot my #FreeBSD server that hosts a #bhyve vm with Windows Server ... network didn't work correctly (for other reasons I found and fixed later), so, couldn't use #RDP nor the VGA console via #VNC to issue a proper shutdown command and hat do resort to #ACPI (like, virtually pushing the button), which worked, but isn't the "cleanest" option.
A serial console is an awesome last resort that just "always works", using this on all my headless FreeBSD and Linux machines ... so I have a *little* hope Windows can provide it as well?

Make sure to add -A to bhyve(8) options for UEFI VMs.
Add bhyve_options="-A" for vm-bhyve UEFI VM machines.

@taylorparizo I would choose #bhyve on #freebsd. I am actually building a little machine in order to migrate the #homelab from ESXi to bhyve.

@stefano Are you sure about that?
I run a #NetBSD VM in #bhyve with #UEFI and so far I haven't had any issues.
And both the NetBSD and the FreeBSD wiki mention that it works:

Friends of #BSDCafe and #Fediverse, tomorrow will be another busy day and I won't be able to accomplish many of the things I'd like. Over the weekend, I'm planning to run installation tests of different BSDs on the old MacBook Pro (still tucked away). I'll also give Xen another shot on #FreeBSD and #NetBSD. Planning some comparative tests with #bhyve. I have a few #xcp-ng setups that have proven quite reliable. Time to give it another go on the BSDs.

Another brilliant, useful and comprehensive post from @vermaden for everyone interested in Bhyve.
Again, thank you for sharing this type of content. Most of the times you get the big picture when using a specific software, but the small details found in your posts are simply gold and make a huge difference!!!

In case you missed it, I strongly suggest to read the excellent article recently written and published by @vermaden about #bhyve on #FreeBSD

Very nice intro tutorial of #bhyve on #freebsd :

By @vermaden, i think.

After struggling for years with the side effect of loaned buffers not being returned fast enough. This finally landed: https://github.com/illumos/illumos-gate/commit/d1d478f315055349ae24efa167cc7ccf5b464dd6 stable bhyve VMs and performance from now on! #bhyve #illumos
However, I came to realize:
- I need way less compute power than I thought I need
- Fans suck (pun intended), I want more silence
- I like #freebsd - I do a lot of tinkering on the NAS box
Plan:
Convert the current ESXi box to a #freebsd system, for ZFS storage and #bhyve virtualization. Retire the current NAS box.
On top of bhyve run three VMs:
- Debian for VDR
- Either Debian or FreeBSD for a fully VPN-ed system (which I need for reasons)
- FreeBSD for userland applications
How we are migrating (many of) our servers from #Linux to #FreeBSD - Part 3 - #Proxmox to FreeBSD

Good morning, friends of #BSDCafe and the #Fediverse!
This morning, I'm busy with the migration of a #virtualization cluster (based on #Proxmox, but also hosting many VMs on #FreeBSD). I've been managing this cluster for years, running it under #ceph, and everything works wonderfully, but the client needs to relocate, and the new location won't have space for the servers.
So, I'm moving the cluster and updating everything to an equivalent (but more modern) external infrastructure. I'll remove #ceph and use local storage in #zfs on individual machines to simplify things, but I'll set up external snapshots every 10 minutes. I thought about moving everything to #FreeBSD and #bhyve, but the client is accustomed to handling routine tasks comfortably through #Proxmox's web interface and wants to keep it.
Besides, Proxmox has always been a solution I've been very comfortable with, so I'll stick with the same setup.
I'll probably document everything with a blog post, but I have months of backlogged posts that I started and still need to finish... ๐ค๐ง
