The free vs literal dichotomy of #translation was written by philosophers, not translators. Nida's formal vs dynamic equivalence was intended as a tool for translators, not a way of classifying entire translations. Let's ditch the dichotomies. We don't need them. We never did.

Some basic Translation Studies concepts that are useful when talking about #theology and #BibleTranslation.

1) No two languages slice up the world the same way. "Mouton" in French refers to both sheep and mutton, for example.

2) Because of this, there simply aren't 1-to-1 correspondences between different languages, apart from preset terminology. Where this terminology exists, it is because people have made it exist, not that the two sets of terms were the same beforehand.

3) Yes, words to have multiple associations. Context does mean that some are more active than others.

4) Equivalence is therefore something translators, interpreters and terminologists create, not something that exists outside of a translation process.

5) A tense in one language is not strictly the same as a similar tense in another. Shifting tenses is therefore a valid translation technique, under certain circumstances.

6) No translation is final or perfect. Neither can any translation convey all possible meanings of a text. That's fine because conveying all meaning isn't what translation is about.

7) Translations are always done for a purpose or for many purposes. The prime way to evaluate them is against that purpose.

8) Literal translation is often not the same as accurate translation.

e-Sword on phone and tablet. A long time ago there was a student, refugee from Iraq I think, who had translated the entire old Assyrian N.T. text himself, I'd love to have that one digitally; but do not know whether he or it are still around.

So we just had a mind blowing thread on #Patriarchy & #Bible #misinterpretations over on #WCT. But it also sparked another conversation & one that always I find interesting regardless of audience. What #BibleTranslation do you prefer? I’m typically using #CSB or my #interlinears because they are the easiest for my teaching style. What’s everyone else carry?

This is just a reminder that the word "nation" in your favourite #BibleTranslation definitely does not mean "nationstate". It means something more akin to ethic group or people group. The concept of nationstates is surprisingly modern, dating to the 18th & 19th centuries.

@exuperius There does still seem to be this distinction, between "cursing the ground for Adam's sake", versus "cursing Adam by requiring him to do heavy labor". I will be working on it, perhaps someday I'll have actual Scripture which lays it out well.

@hilltopeditor Wow. To decide to abhor! So yes, sin came in with Adam - but God began to abhor the earth, to detest it, to consider it detestable, then and there. Better than I have ever had before. Thank you.

Perhaps we could define that word "curse" using a sentence something like, "The curse of God upon this world, denies it many blessings, and will eventually require its destruction as Christ the Lord said it." But I want to be very careful before I permit myself to think that that is correct.

OK, #wct , a question. I have long thought that a "curse" is simply "a persistent unpleasantry done by someone upon someone else". But it was just suggested elsewhere that Adam and Eve were punished, but not cursed, and that God cursed the earth for their sake. The only catch for me is, that means I don't know what a "curse" is. Anyone have a good working definition?
