Tell me about going car-free, friends.
Our car needs extensive repairs. It's not the danger-danger-people-will-die repairs, rather the 'our car will just stop working if we don't get this done eventually' kind. And these repairs are going to cost many thousands, and the car? It is not worth many thousands.
So the logical step to is to sell it to someone who can easily do those repairs or has access to cheap parts.
However, we've been looking for other cars that would work for us (we're a household of six) and there is nothing in our budget or location. Really, nothing.
So... what if we sold it and just... didn't buy another?
Pros: saving about $200 a fortnight in fuel, rego, and probably more if I account for unnecessary trips we do. Obviously much more environmentally friendly.
Cons: evening work and sport commitments for the kids. They could catch the bus to their training/workplace but buses don't run at night/Sundays/public holidays so that is a bummer.
All the rest of the stuff would be possible to overcome, I think. Feels scary but I think we can do it, at least as a kind of experiment?
Tips? Tricks? Advice?
