The Helicon is a brass instrument in the #tuba family, first manufactured around 1845. It has ultimately been replaced by the more popular #sousaphone which is essentially the same instrument with a directional bell bolted on!
My rather battered example of unknown make is rotary valved, has 18-feet of tubing and is in the key of Bb.
