@Ciela I don't entirely agree - an algorithm tries to achieve what it was designed to do. For the #bigsocial sites, the goal is maximum user engagement which translates to (in theory) more impressions on ads, and therefore more revenue. They could just set their algorithms to achieve other goals, they just wouldn't be rewarded for doing so, and so they respond to that stimulus as an organisation. Algorithms aren't inherently bad - choose your own Algo would be interesting for the #fediverse

I've been on #Threads checking in daily. I still find myself coming back to #Mastodon. The absence of user defined content filters is a deal breaker. Not surprised because NO #Meta app has them.

And I get a stream of posts from people with whom I have no connection, socially, or shared interests via followed hashtags.

Mastodon empowers users to control what they see on their feeds more so than the other #BigSocial apps. It is why I come back. #twittermigration #Instagram

For all that is said about how #SocialMedia gave a voice to the maginalised, too many still weren't really welcome on #BigSocial even before Musk came long.

So they came to the #Fediverse, and built something new, something better. And it's thanks to them that, when the rest of us fled Twitter and Reddit, we found something that was already brilliant.

So this #PrideMonth, let's raise our beverage vessels to the queer people who made the #Fediverse what it is.

Spot on. I’m not a huge fan of #Meta, but if they bring their user base over to the #Fediverse, those of us enthusiastic about it as a genuine alternative to #BigSocial stand to benefit. If its a trick, fine, defederate (and FaithTree.social would in that case), but if they interoperate properly, it’s a huge step towards the #OpenWeb. PS: I'm not currently a moderator, + the behavior-centric perspective I'm describing may have blind spots I'm unaware of. It's certainly not the purely content-centric kind of moderation model you might expect from a #BigSocial data-harvesting content farm.

But so far, this perspective seems consistent with my privileged experience on a smoothly-moderated larger instance here.

So, is #BigSocial poised to burst its own bubble? I'd say it's likely, and quite soon at that.

Consider what we've seen so far with #Twitter and #Reddit: people from both have jumped ship to the #Fediverse. When (not if) #Facebook and #Instagram fall, the same will happen, regardless of whether they have an app that federates.

Meanwhile, we have the choice to build safe, intentional, and vibrant communities on #Fedi without needing to "disrupt" or chase breakneck growth.

ofc it's for each instance to decide but I don't trust them ; them owning (even if various) instances they control defeats the liberating aspect of APub.

Each user is free to associate with whomever & however they please but I don't trust Big Tech's capitalism.

Still, it'd be a great idea to have dedicated Tumblr/Twitter instances for interest-based socialisation :)

Wow, Reddit both lied and slandered the developer of Apollo and he was smart enough to record (and share) the call. 🤦‍♂️

I’ve primarily lurked for 9 years. I loved the Reddit Gifts secret santa community (both giving and receiving). What a shame they are willing to throw all that good will away in the pursuit of unnecessary profit at the expense of the long term.

Long live the Fediverse.

@yaitorr @NMBA @briannawu Banking is pretty heavily regulated to preserve, if not anonymity, at least privacy. All communications from my bank urge me to keep them secret, and that's why a bank statement is useful as a proof of address.

#BigSocial encourages people to broadcast personal information, and mines data to garner more.

My younger kid really impressed me today. (my older one a month ago, but that’s a different story.)

I hadn’t seen them in a while and they pulled out a flip phone.

They are 15 and have had iPhones since like forever.

Apparently they have decided that TikTok and Instagram and #BigSocial is all bullshit, so they’re bucking the trend.

They said it was a lot of work to convince their mom to let them give up the iPhone. (something something safety location, services, etc..)

But they reckon they’re not going to get kidnapped, and they really like how cool it feels to snap it shut!

Now to track down the Walkman they’re looking for 🤓

Instead of trying to proactively design a better social experience, could the intention be to shed liability for all those thorny problems by ... outsourcing them?

If yor organisation or small business is only accessible through a Facebook page that's pretty much problematic. It means you have to register to a website that spy on you and contribute to surveillance capitalism just to have access to basic information #technology #gafam #bigsocial #surveillancecapitalism

This will hurt really badly even if they are on multiple platforms at once, as their mere presence on a #BigSocial will make readers desire to sign up to that social and it will cause a huge distribution inequality in the future. #fediverse is the answer. Is it easy to develop a readerbase here? no, but its much more meaningful

Het is me 9 jaar gelukt om #WhatsApp te mijden, maar vandaag moet ik er toch (tijdelijk) aan geloven. In verband met de verkoop van een (niet mijn) huis moet ik verplicht in een WhatsApp-groep. Toch weer een overwinning voor #BigSocial. Ze zijn zo ver in de maatschappij geïntegreerd dat je er nier omheen kunt.
