Hello mastodon #BikeMaintenance folk.
The compression nut thing in my carbon steerer tube has gradually slipped up to the top. Can they just be tapped down again or is there a way of releasing them first?
A brake service for Dad's bike.
Components stripped, cleaned, greased, lightly oiled.
The difference it's made is huge, was notchy, now actuating nicely.
My current plan is a new pair of marathon 365 by the end of October. 600km or so from now (8000km total for the current tyres) #BikeTooter #BikeMaintenance

I have an issue and that is rust spots on my chain and casette after cleaning. Well after it has dried that is. There may be something in my process I'm doing wrong. Since it's summertime and a dry lube does the job I just clean everything with Muck Off's pink bike cleaner. Let dry and once dry relube. But now I have rusty spots...
Help! Advice?

Anyone seen this odd S shaped pattern on their cassette before? #Biketoot #bikemechanic #biketooter #bikemaintenance

I'm trialing some wax based chain lube instead of the usual 'dry' oil.
I've heard good things about wax, but it might be marketing.
I'm using a drip wax on both bikes.
New 10 speed Shimano cassette and chain on the gravel bike, and an 11 speed Campagnolo cassette and KMC chain on the road bike.
I stripped the lube off both chains and I've applied drip wax 3 times and left to dry before riding. Shifting seems good on both bikes.

The best, most straightforward gear indexing tutorial I've yet found. I've been using this as a reference for a few years now and always assume others who maintain their own bikes must know about it too, but in case you haven't seen it... #bikeMaintenance

The Domane is getting an upgrade.
First job is replacing the Trek BB90 with the Token Ninja BB90 bottom bracket.
Then, It came with a Shimano R565 chainring and crank and I'll likely just make it all Shimano 105 or ultegra, depending on cost.

I turned this somewhat rambling thread (is there another way to make a thread on Mastodon or is just replying to yourself as I did "best practices?") into a story on my website SecondChanceBikes.org. Select "Stories" on the homepage.

so the cable slides a tiny bit. Tighten the nut securely, and release the brake calipers. With luck it is perfect. But if not, if you centered the barrel adjuster before all this, you can turn it to get it perfect.
Brakes CAN be adjusted by loosening the nuts holding the cable at the wheel end, and that is necessary for major changes. But the barrel adjuster provides fine-tuning after positioning the cable close to where it should be.Doing fine tuning by clamping and releasing repeatedly is a good way to mess up the cable, start it fraying. I replace up to 4 cables on most of the bikes I get, and many of them are still good except the end looks like (more)‡οΈ

as it spins and still have good braking.
Once you select the barrel position, you keep it still while tightening the collar against the handle so the barrel is locked in place.
