Happy to see that #Bill28 has been repealed. #OntEd

Great news. It looks like #bill28 has been repealed in #ontario. For those out of the loop, the provincial government recently passed a bill forcing the grossly underpaid education workers #union to end their #strike, or be fined $4000 per day (that's basically 10% of their annual income in a lot of cases). They ignored and pushed on, joined by other unions and they got the bill repealed.
It's good to see any progress with regards to #education in Ontario, even if it's tiny wins.
Now let's push to prevent the destruction of the #greenbelt and get some better healthcare funding.
#dougford is the worst.

Humiliated and under the threat of a general strike, I hope to see #Ford and #Lecce make good on their promise repeal their unconstitutional legislation 12 days after it received Royal Assent.

Not sure how I’m meant to concentrate at work not knowing when and if Doug Ford is actually going to repeal Bill 28 today. And also how quickly the legislation will go through. How is our bargaining team meant to bargain with the Bill still on the books?

Big welcome to @TheLawofWork here on Mastodon. An excellent follow from over on the bird site for those who are interested in #LabourLaw or #OntEd
He’s the reason I was able to make sense of the #Bill28 drama.
(Apologies for no CW on this post, my thinking is that this is about a user, not politics… but I’ll understand if that’s rubbing some folks the wrong way.)
@Ryan A promise to rescind #Bill28 is a good start, but the fight is still just beginning. Ford and Lecce are not to be trusted. Ford needs to recall the legislature now!

Why did you use s.33? "Endless premiers have used it." "I said from the get go that we'd would use every tool at our disposal to make sure kids are in class."
Ford ends his news conference on what he calls a "lighter note" and a story about his tie. It's the #twilightzone
So much of labour relations is political (on both sides) and trying to glean what's really going on from a news conference is a "mug's game" (to quote my late father). #onlab #onted #CUPE #Bill28

Timing is everything - I'm #teaching "industrial conflict - #strikes and #lockouts" to my graduate class tonight.
What a #rollercoaster the past week has been and the ride isn't over yet.

As "political protests" go, the one #CUPE just organized against the #Ontario government recent, and constitutionally questionable #Bill28, was way more effective than I'm sure anyone guessed it was going to be https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/cupe-strike-education-ontario-schools-closed-1.6640386 #ONpoli

RT @TheLawofWork
If #Bill28 just imposed a 'collective agreement' w/out notwithstanding clause, then situation would be similar to that which occurred with the Putting Students First Act, 2012:
That law essentially imposed a contract, & was found to violate Charter. https://twitter.com/TheLawofWork/status/1589628287860736000
“Of course it’s an illegal strike ... The government made it illegal to strike yesterday.”
Is it that simple (a political protest has been found to be a strike under the Labour Relations Act in many cases). But if the #bill28 is (somehow) problematic - e.g. the preemptive use of the notwithstanding clause or some argument relating to section 28 of the Charter, is the strike still illegal, since it was the legislation that made it illegal?
Wondering what the #unions that endorsed the #Tories in the last #Ontario provincial election are saying about the Ford governments enactment of #bill28 and its use of the #notwithstanding clause?

Historic day in Canadian labour today as #CUPE carries on with its "strike" (or "protest") in the face of the governments passage of #Bill28 and its unprecedented use of the Charter's notwithstanding clause.
Government says it will use all means at its disposal to deal with this. Fines (under Bill 28) and an unlawful strike application (which would be more complicated than a usual situation) seem like the most obvious. The coming days will be interesting.
#Ontario legislature is debating (started at 5 am) #Bill28 Keeping #Students in Class Act which, if passed, imposes a collective agreement on 55,000 education workers represented by #CUPE, makes striking illegal, includes fines and uses the notwithstanding clause in the #Charter for the first time in #labour legislation https://www.theglobeandmail.com/business/article-ontario-strike-back-to-work-bill/#:~:text=On%20Monday%20%E2%80%93%20in%20response%20to%20a%20potential,to%20mount%20a%20legal%20challenge%20against%20the%20legislation and https://www.ola.org/en/legislative-business/bills/parliament-43/session-1/bill-28
