Despite the ravages affecting her health, Holiday tapped a late-career wellspring on sets like Velvet Mood and this LP -- both from '56. Holiday revisits hits like "Strange Fruit" and "God Bless the Child" along with newer material such as the title track. A sextet or septet provides restrained musical settings for Holiday's matter-of-fact delivery -- an artist who knows the end is nigh but chooses to forge on.

Billie Holiday - Lady Sings the Blues
Billie had reason to sing the blues late in her career.
This was recorded in '56, only a few years before her death at the shockingly young age of 44, and I know a lot of folks don't like the "rougher" sounding voice she's got in these last recordings...but it's hard to listen to this and think much other than "wow".
(Well, I also think of David Sidaris' impression singing the Oscar Meyer song.)

On this day in 1959 Billie Holiday took leave of this earthly burden and left her mortal coil behind. The Federal Bureau of Narcotics had been targeting her since at least 1939. She was arrested and handcuffed for drug possession as she lay dying, her hospital room was raided and she was placed under police guard.
