I’ve only used Open Street Maps in a tertiary way, through #maps.me, but it is an invaluable community-driven project. As @siegi mentions, “embrace; extend; extinguish” is classic #predatory #Microsoft, I’m appalled that they are still at it.

I wish interactive maps (Google, Bing, and Here) could easily pull in extra data, like bridge numbers and lock numbers on canals, weirs on navigable rivers, and water levels—similar to traffic density.
I wish "street view" cameras went more places that cars and bikes can't – including under bridges, through canal tunnels, over dams and weirs.
Is this data not collected because these edge-case interests are too hard to monetize?
