The Finding Engineering-Linked Indicators (FELIX) team, including #BioBSE's Sue Celniker and #BioEGSB's Ben Brown, has led the efforts to test tools that can quickly determine whether an organism has been modified. The team designed and produced increasingly challenging biological samples and assessed how well the tools made by participating academic and industry groups performed.
Our Biological Systems and Engineering Division #BioBSE is hosting their annual meeting today. While we are lucky to have a great view of the SF Bay today, the real stars of the show are the research presentations.
We've been learning about Process Engineering & Analytics, Biodesign, and
BioEngineering & BioMedical Sciences.

#Microbes are cool.
Thomas Eng, one of our research scientists, is working to tame microbes so that we can create a more sustainable plastic.

Thirdhand smoke is the residual contamination from tobacco smoke on surfaces and furnishings and gives off toxins over time.
Biosciences Area researchers and collaborators tested the effect of thirdhand smoke––the residue left from tobacco smoke on surfaces––in mice to determine how genetic predispositions contribute to an individual’s cancer risk.

Researchers from our #BioBSE and #BioMBIB divisions are working on a novel method for direct ocean capture of carbon using bacteria. Removing CO2 from the oceans will enable them to continue to do their job of absorbing excess CO2 from the atmosphere.
