I'm just adding this webinar on using #Biochar onto this thread and not targeting towards you Nebulous.
Join International Biochar Initiative on September 21st to hear how biochar is being used to regenerate lands damaged by hydraulic gold mining! https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/biochar-and-mine-reclamation-cleaning-brownfields-and-contaminated-water-tickets-711632821927
I'm starting to see so many new #BioChar initiatives that our hopes towards having meaningful Direct Air Capture for Carbon Dioxide Removal are getting more and more realistic every day.
José Fernando Grajeda Cruz, Head of R&D at Exomad Green says biochar also has a wide variety of benefits which help mitigate additional emissions.
"For Bolivia the most important it would be the fact that by improving crop yields, it will reduce deforestation..." he says.

More #Biochar sequestering CO2!
Many cities in Europe are currently discovering the "Sponge City-Concept" (in German: "Schwammstadt").
Biochar can add a lot of value in this context: e.g. protect & support trees, retain large amounts of water, contribute to negative emissions.
There are already promising projects out there but the true potential is far from being discovered. Thousands of trees are planted every year in a big city; all of them would benefit from this approach.
Fairly expensive perhaps, but considering it for the certification maybe. I need to try to find a source of income soon.
You can study biochar production technologies; physicochemical properties; standards, classification, and certification; biochar effects when used as a soil amendment; biochar carbon persistence in soils, carbon accounting, and climate change; and commercialization of the #biochar industry. https://ibi-online-training-course.teachable.com/p/home

Every year the world produces a staggering 10 billion kilograms of coffee waste globally. Most ends up in landfills.
"The disposal of organic waste poses an environmental challenge as it emits large amounts of greenhouse gases including methane and carbon dioxide, which contribute to climate change,"
Converting biomass into #BioChar sequesters carbon and keeps it from being oxidized or worse like in many compost heaps reduced to methane.

And a day without news on #BioChar role in helping us reach a more sustainable, circular economy is a day without some of our most impactful #ClimateProgress
CarbOliva is a continuous pyrolysis plant that transforms olive biomass into high quality charcoal (#biochar) and generates steam for Acesur's pomace oil extraction process in Puente del Obispo, in the province of Jaén producing 4,000 mt/year of biochar is going to develop several more plants.

BioChar is hopefully going to really take off and I see some positive signs. I'm thinking of applying work for International Biochar Council though so I'd say that.
In addition to removing 12,500 MTCO2e per year, this project will generate an estimated 13,500 MWh of clean, consistent, and sustainable electricity annually, while also addressing 12 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. Let’s solve this! #climateaction #biochar https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20230830820854/en/VGrid-Energy-Systems-Joins-Puro.earth-Accelerate-Program-with-New-Project-to-Generate-13500-MWh-of-Clean-Electricity-and-12500-CORCs-Annually
Carbon farming activities adopted at larger scale via appropriate land management practices represent great potential in contributing to and reaching our climate objectives.
Great to see that the EU parliament is pushing for BioChar Carbon Removal as one of the most scalable and durable technologies in mitigating climate change. #DAC #CDR #BioChar #ClimateProgress #ClimateSolutions https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/AGRI-AD-746718_EN.pdf

Colorado lawmakers gave initial approval for a study to assess whether biochar would work to plug defunct wells.
Sequestering carbon dioxide that been pulled from our atmosphere in order to help prevent more greenhouse gases from polluting our thin, precious atmosphere. #BioChar #DAC #CDR https://coloradosun.com/2023/02/20/biochar-colorado-abandonded-oil-gas-wells/
There are 3.2 million orphan wells in U.S. that can hold 10 to 130 tons of #biochar each in order to more safely cap them which would sequester about seven million tons of carbon dioxide thereby keeping it out of our already polluted atmosphere.
Biochar Basics: A-to-Z Guide to #Biochar Production, Use, and Benefits outlines essential info to help anyone understand and get started with biochar! Dive in to explore:
1️⃣ What biochar is and how it helps sequester carbon.
2️⃣ Different biochar applications like agriculture, land mine restoration, and more.

A major point that I'm trying to convey to non-soil scientists is that using BioChar to remove carbon dioxide out of our thin, precious atmosphere can be both a direct mitigation as well as an adaptation to #GlobalWarming

For news and stories to share #ClimateHope, check out the #ClimateProgress or #ClimateSolutions hashtags.
For example, by replacing 15% of the sand typically used in concrete with coffee biochar, researchers find that the addition enhanced the strength by 29.3%.
Sequestering food waste as #BioChar in #Concrete is a way to use an adaptation to #GlobalWarming as a mitigation strategy too! win/win #WeCanDoThis https://amp.theguardian.com/science/2023/aug/23/full-of-beans-scientists-use-processed-coffee-grounds-to-make-stronger-concrete

What is #CDR, carbon dioxide removal?
Carbon removal is the process of physically drawing down carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and durably storing it. According to the IPCC, carbon removal is more than capturing CO2 from the atmosphere.
It’s also about: “durably storing it in geological, terrestrial, ocean reservoirs, or in products.”
Pyrolysis of annual plant material biomass into #BioChar can amend our depleted soils and bring our thin, precious atmosphere's [CO2] back down.
@nebulousmenace
Yeah, I had no illusion that these batteries would provide storage for all that needs to be pulled back out of our atmosphere, but I hope that people start thinking of other uses for the gas besides just as garbage I guess is what I'm getting at.
Cement CO2 storage like with CarbonCure technology and such can do some, but I'm more inclined towards #Biochar as a terra preta soil amendment for the majority of what is drawndown.
My preferred carbon dioxide removal #CDR technology is #BioChar but because of sea level rise #SLR there's going to be a growing demand for beach sand replenishment.
UNDO is a world-leading carbon dioxide removal project developer specialising in enhanced rock weathering. Enhanced weathering is a nature-based technology that permanently locks away CO₂ from the atmosphere.
They spread the basalt on farmland, but can be used for beaches too. https://un-do.com/enhanced-rock-weathering/
Exomad Green, a company committed to the vision of becoming the world's leading producer of sustainable Biochar. Their avowed mission is the conviction that Biochar can play a crucial role in creating a more sustainable future. They just began as the first #BioChar company in Bolivia and hope to significantly contribute to the development of a green economy and the agrotechnology industry in the region.
Other than that PR, I don't know anything about them, but still cool to see.
Interested in reducing the [CO2] of our thin, precious atmosphere? Here's a map of where there are Carbon Dioxide Removal facilities. #CDR #DAC I'm hoping that they add #BioChar producers to the map soon. https://www.cdr.fyi/carbon-removal-map

TIL - Sewer sludge (euphemistically called #biosolids by many cities) can be turned into #biochar via #pyrolysis.
If the pyrolysis happens at >600C for >10 minutes, the resulting biochar will be free of #microplastics, #PFAs, pathogens, and pharmaceuticals - all of which could continue to be a problem when you just #compost sewer sludge.
And... the #phosphorous is retained in the biochar, meaning it'll be a fertilizer in addition to the other biochar benefits.
