PLA, or polylactic acid, is a biodegradable plastic made from renewable sources such as corn starch or sugar cane. PLA has many advantages over petroleum-based plastics, such as lower greenhouse gas emissions, higher biocompatibility, and better mechanical properties. However, PLA also has some drawbacks, such as high cost, low thermal stability, and slow degradation rate, which limit its applications and environmental benefits.

Starch-based straws. Doesn't get soggy quickly like the paper straws.

On the left, probably cornstarch PLA. At an open air restaurant where the family are regulars for dinner.

The purple straw in the picture on the right is made of and completely edible, in my coffee from The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf.

I should add that I'm still on holiday in - I haven't seen these in Melbourne yet.
