Brilliant article on Bristol Post about how there’s zero chance of building on this woodland, from the folks who make these decisions, basically calling the idea silly.

Hopefully all the developers have now dropped out, I’ve certainly sent the quotes to a few other bidders who emailed me. If so we can pick the land up cheap, and use the rest of the money for the cleanup and restoration work ahead.

The case of logging and clear felling the proposed Great Koala National Park - On Consultation and consent 1/3

Times have rapidly changed. The old school extractive ways were perceived as legitimate under colonial extractive regimes.

Today we are confronted with an urgency of interlocking global crises of the environment and democracy. Anthropocene defaunation and an increasingly uninhabitable climate exposes human well-being under increasing threat.

'Business as usual' is no longer tenable. A new set of circumstances demands a rapid transition and consensual modes of action. Trust and legitimacy can be generated by genuine participatory deliberation of all 'stakeholders' and societal institutions.

People increasingly claim ownership of their planet and question the legality of the commodification and financialization of their only home.

Consultation and cooperation in a democratic civil society must consult all 'stakeholders' in public (digital or f2f) for a consensual outcome. The operating party has to face the affected community in person in public meetings. Stewards of biodiversity and the climate have to be present 'at the table'.
Discussions and negotiations should be public, transparent and take all aspects (externalities) into account.

Stop deforestation and clearfelling in a climate emergency
Stop eradicating ecosystems in a biodiversity crisis
Stop the denial of reality
Stop logging the proposed Great Koala National Park now

There is no consent.

Our environmental laws are failing us in the face of the climate crisis

"If we don’t stop this rampant approval of fossil fuel projects, by 2073 we’ll be living through the large-scale destruction of ecosystems and will have breached multiple tipping points, leading to the collapse of our food systems and hellish heat and fires."

"If we don’t get this right, we’re not just making every day Threatened Species Day, we’re headed towards a toxic, sad, future, with damage and destruction that cannot be unwound. There are no second chances or take backs, it’s now or never."

Prof Tim Flannery is a former climate commissioner, chief councillor at the Climate Council and one of Australia’s leading writers on climate change

Legacy of racist US housing policies extends even to bird data
"....Ellis-Soto and his team studied bird sightings in more than 9,000 neighbourhoods, covering almost 200 US cities....
“You can better predict where you have data on birds based on systemic racism — redlining maps from 1933 — than climate, tree cover or population density, everything a bird should actually care about”

The Endangered Species Act (ESA) predicts that up to two-thirds of the world’s Polar bears could disappear by mid-century.

Absence of a quantitative link between anthropogenic GHG emissions, sea ice loss, and declining polar bear vital rates has foiled full ESA implementation.

In a recent paper from Science, scientists establish a direct link between emissions and survival rate of Polar bears.

Some touching recent feedback from a reader of " & Pollination: and Society":

"[telling stories is]...one of the special things that makes your writing so wonderful and interesting (as well as incredibly informative and accessible)"

That kind of comment makes the hard work of book writing worthwhile!
