US government is funding kills of endangered animals, activists say

"The US federal government has been accused of simultaneously paying to protect endangered species while funding state-organized hunts of large, endangered predators, like gray wolves and grizzly bears, that increase the likelihood of their extinction.

A coalition of more than 35 animal welfare and Indigenous groups in late 2021 formally petitioned the US Department of the Interior to develop rules to withhold money from state agencies that fund the “slaughters”. But the department has not responded to the petition, the groups allege."

I happened to post on iNaturalist a few old pictures of pitcher-plants (Sarracenia spp) I took when I was doing my dissertation field-work in Alabama back in 2004. One of the folks studying these plants reached out to me. Turns out they are rare and endangered species. The sites where I found them -- entire boggy fields full of pitcher plants -- were wiped out in the name of capitalist growth and real estate development.

Spent the entire weekend mowing a permaculture farm. All of the 20 odd people there were kind, intelligent, and completely willing and able to solve the climate-, biodiversity- and social crises.

Great and welcome antidote to cynicism.

Let's spend our privilege more in the field doing good, and less online complaining about the bad.

The AMOC: tipping this century, or not?

realclimate.org/index.php/arch

Speaking of shorebirds in the North Atlantic, a collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation would result in the extinction of many species and collapse of coastal ecosystems (and their functions and services).

"An AMOC collapse would be a massive, planetary-scale disaster. Some of the consequences: Cooling and increased storminess in northwestern Europe, major additional sea level rise especially along the American Atlantic coast, a southward shift of tropical rainfall belts (causing drought in some regions and flooding in others), reduced ocean carbon dioxide uptake, greatly reduced oxygen supply to the deep ocean, likely ecosystem collapse in the northern Atlantic, and others."

Stay tuned, September 15-17: fightfossilfuels.net/

For those in NYC or who can make it, a week of actions culminating in a mass march on 9/17 and a mass direct action on 9/18: acttoendfossilfuels.org/

YASunidos: Ecuadorian Authorities Thwart National Referendum on Yasuní-ITT through Fraud and Militarization

Illustrates the point that under capitalism, it is impossible to attain lasting reforms, much last structural transformation. Anything achieved is accomplished under the impetus of social movement, but with the ruling wealthy and their politicians pushing back, such reforms only last as long as the balance of social forces favors working people and our movements. In the U.S., the two dominant political parties play their electoral games, promising the sun, electioneering, horsetrading, triangulating, while remaining within the parameters of capital's need for profits and intrinsic growth dynamic. There is no "lesser evil," just nuances of greater evil. The battles never end. It's time for our "Kobayashi Maru."

This week for was cut by $25 million, at a time when Antarctic ice loss is critically low (2.6 million square kilometers of sea ice have been lost, currently at the lowest levels in at least 120 yr). As a result of these budget cuts, important science projects including surveys of sea-ice thickness have been cancelled. Meanwhile, $200 million in funding has just been announced by the same government in the same week for .
Virtually every news broadcast has a dedicated sports segment played on (very frequent) loop around the clock in Australia. We have dedicated sports channels, radio blocked out for days at time. Our children can rattle off their favourite players jersey numbers along with endless stats about who won what game or medal. Yet when I speak with school groups NONE can answer the question “who’s your favourite Australian scientist?”. We are so fortunate to have WORLDCLASS scientists in Australia! Those individuals don’t do it for fame or fortune. In fact, most are employed on horrendous casual contracts, massively overworked, burdened with and woefully underpaid. They don’t get airtime. Their selflessness and dedication to the voiceless (nature) and greater good isn’t celebrated. We don’t win medals.

FFS Australia, teach your children about the real heroes. Fund those working to make society a better, safer, fairer place. Stop being distracted by pretty shiny things. Please, we are 💯 running out of time!

Currently writing the part of the dissertation that comes down to "well, we do have quite a few laws that are supposed to protect biodiversity, but it rather seems they aren't effective." What I really want to write is an angry rant, but I guess that's not the done thing. Still feels appropriate, though.

Just read the sentence "We respect the natural balance of our planet as much as possible." There are so many things wrong with that sentence.

Brazil’s Lula pushes end to deforestation, stumbles on fossil fuels

"Under pressure from the EU to rein in deforestation or face trade restrictions, Amazon countries must figure out how to bring prosperity to the region without destroying the forest. And that’s proving difficult.

At a two-day summit starting Tuesday, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is looking to corral countries to speed up efforts to stop deforestation and decide on a common strategy to save the rainforest.

But it's likely to be an uphill climb, with countries disagreeing on whether they should commit to a zero deforestation goal and on whether oil and gas drilling should be banned in the region. "

I am so excited. You folks are all amazing.

P.S Crowdfunder have agreed to pause the money until we win the auction, so please do go off, and it’ll all be returned if we fail. Spare change will be used for the Herculean job of cleanup, and ongoing management.

"Although the precise numbers for present extinction rates vary according to different time frames, taxonomic groups, and estimation methods and thus are difficult to compare with each other, scientific opinions converge on an overall wild species extinction rate that is at least tens to hundreds of times higher than the background rate and is likely to be increasing rapidly."

My charity is attempting to buy a piece of woodland in east Bristol and I need you all to come out in support. We all see stories of 200 acres or 2000 acres of community buyout, but this 5 acres is in the middle of a major city, and it’s just as important as something far bigger out in the countryside. Please read this description, and help me save a tiny important fragment of amazing woodland. crowdfunder.co.uk/p/save-black
