Several news articles recently about #bioluminescence showing glowing waves crashing against beaches. Usually caused by #dinoflagellates, this #chemoluminescence reaction (luciferin with luciferase) is widespread throughout the water column by many organisms (fish, jellyfish, zooplankton, mollusks, bacteria...). Very common in the deep sea for communication, predation, and escape, and often due to bacterial #symbiosis. Most light is blue or green but can be red.

This is a linocut print of the firefly squid (Watasenia scintillans), also called sparkling enope squid or hotaru-ika in Japan. These tiny squid live at depth (200 to 400 m) & they are bioluminescent & emit blue light from photophores.
The print shows the squid against a white background so you can see the whole animal & then its reflection is shown …

At 10 minutes past midnight this morning, I was stood in the water at Three Cliffs Bay! The water was warm and being in the water meant my legs weren't bombarded by sandhoppers (yeuk!) Standing under the stars, watching occasional flashes of bioluminescence really is a privilege and I enjoyed every second.

Scientists have discovered that the ocean contains more stars than the observable universe. This is because bioluminescence makes some marine organisms glow in the dark. The implications are enormous for astronomy, ecology and tourism as the ocean becomes a new frontier for exploration and wonder.

Fireflies are fascinating insects that can produce light without heat. The light is produced by a chemical reaction in the abdomen, which the nervous system controls. The light is used for communication, mating and defence.
