The goo is released by endophytic fungi, fungi that live with a plant and don’t cause disease. They are largely beneficial for the plant, enhancing the plant’s growth and nutrient gain. Both the plant and the microorganism benefit from their symbiotic relationship 💚

These fungi ooze out exudates, liquid reservoirs that contain enzymes and other products, to help their cells survive. They can then reabsorb this external cache when needed.
