Hogfish, the chameleons of the ocean, can "see" with their skin even after they die, thanks to light-sensing cells beneath their colour-changing cells. These cells act like "internal Polaroid film" that captures the changes in their skin colour and helps them adjust it to match their environment. This remarkable ability could have implications for sensor technology and bio-inspired design. livescience.com/animals/fish/c

Taken early this morning.

🌅

It makes sense that all these berry plants were facing the sun as it rose.

That's what plants do;

They adjust their direction to where the energy is the most abundant.

👀

🌱

🤔

I think I will do this more myself.

😄

Thanks, plants!

Tunweni Sorghum Brewery - a model for biomimicry quoted in Mathews' paper. A quick internet search reveals nothing about its ongoing existence. Anyone help here?

I couldn't help but notice the massive Microsoft data center hiding behind these newly planted trees. 🌳 🏭 🏭 🏭 🏭 🏭 🌳

Little did I know this was part of an ecosystem project! After a Microsoft team had "researched local ecology, including native habitat types and biodiversity, soil health, water and air quality, as well as community agricultural practices" they decided to use "the tools of biomimicry" to enhance their data center.

This... this is biomimicry according to Microsoft.

a new contender for we1irdest article title of 2023!

the glassy-winged sharpshooter forms its urine into droplets, which it then flings away from itself using an "anal stylus" (i cannot make this up) with an acceleration of 40+ Gs. why? "sharpshooters actually pee this way to save energy because they piss a lot." (again, this is a real quote)

aside from an uncomfortably intimate view into the pissing habits of small insects, this investigation may actually have some use. the flicking motion achieves superpropulsion (velocity faster than the motion used for ejection) through a very precise manipulation of surface tension, which could be a new, more efficient way to get getting water out of tiny mechanics than current methods.

and if that isn't cool you'll just have to live with the fact you now know a fair amount about bug piss. you're welcome!!
