PLA bioplastics, a type of plastic made from plant-based materials, are often touted as a greener alternative to conventional plastics. However, a new study shows that PLA bioplastics, such as reduced growth, reproduction, and survival, can negatively impact aquatic life. The study suggests that PLA bioplastics are not as eco-friendly as they seem and that more research is needed to assess their environmental effects.

Moving away from fossil fuels also means developing from renewable resources. Babetta Marrone and a Los Alamos National Laboratory team have built BioManIAC, AI-based software to understand polymer structures and their material properties. deixismagazine.org/2023/06/pla

The excitement with , , and cornstarch polymers ain’t it; the products they’re attempting to replace are intended to survive hot beverages/food and prolonged exposure to moisture. We need to reduce our need for these products rather than simply replacing them with materials that by definition cannot be 100% biodegradable. Intermediate steps are necessary, but your local coffee shop hawking the latest and greatest ”biocup” is no reason for you to stop bringing your own thermos.

Regular reminder: "bioplastics" are NOT better for the environment, and "biodegradable" plastics don't biodegrade unless they're in an industrial composter. The focus needs to be on reducing unnecessary plastic use, and closing the loop on everything else. Making plastic out of corn/bamboo instead really doesn't help. See here for more:

I am now more convinced that AI can play a transformative role in rethinking our economy. I still dread the implications on the workforce and inequality, but I am also more hopeful now.

Please note that I know NOTHING about the science behind it all, the AI did pretty much all of the work there. This took me a couple of minutes - Could be that the result is complete nonsense, but imagine what an expert can do!

@arstechnica so, the concept of converting terrestrial into or is insanely bad. First, the inputs (principally in the form of nitrate fertilizers) are massively carbon intensive, offsetting some or all of the nominal carbon benefits. And secondly, the cropland and agg products compete with scarce arible land and food/fodder, driving up the cost and decreasing the availability of food. It's just a loose/lose
