Finished listening to the #audiobook of "The Secret Life of Trees" by Peter Wohlleben and I am thoroughly and utterly charmed by its narrative. Yes, it's a work of #nonfiction, but it's not dry at all. And yes, it's from the point of view of an old #German who manages a #forest in #Europe but I found quite a lot of food for thought that applies to the southern #Ontario #bioregion (mostly in interaction and species diversity). Highly recommend.

Back to the future with a new bioregional journal

Cascadia has a new bioregional journal, Cascadia Spoke. The journal is a revival of that good old medium that has graced the world with so many great journals, bioregional and other. Paper and print.

The journal is the brainchild of Brandon Letsinger, who as an organizer, promoter and entrepreneur has a lot to do with the spread of the Cascadia idea in recent years. He was pivotal in creation of the Cascadia Department of Bioregion site, which offers a comprehensive overview of the bioregional concept and its application in Cascadia, the watersheds draining into the Pacific from what is now known as Northern California to Southeast Alaska.

Nature’s gift to nature in early winter storms

"The current wet spell, made up of a parade of atmospheric rivers, is a welcome change from the last three years of record dry and warm conditions. For very good reasons, the focus during these big, early winter storms is first and foremost on flood management and public safety. There is of course also great interest in the potential of these storms to relieve water shortages for communities and farms. What is not always appreciated is the role of these early winter storms in supporting the health of freshwater ecosystems."

I'm a retired anthropologist/archaeologist, studied #climate variability since 1992 as part of my dissertation research. On the north Coast of Monterey Bay, a mile from the beach and 80 feet above sea level.

#Environmental activist since 1968, active in Earth First! from the beginning, documented the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989. Currently active in supporting #habitat and the #naturalworld in the Santa Cruz #Bioregion.

@bhaugen @Matt_Noyes In principle I'd expect #bioregion to be the deeper principle (for example, in the context of building a pattern language for #commoning). With watershed as a major (possibly determining) subsystem in a region. I do see the storytelling value of watershed though - more immediately perceivable, narratives more concrete, tribal identities a little less central? Would be interested to see this topic explored further.
