By contrast, Ashley seems to be almost completely unchanged mechanically (as I understand at least) and it really shows. If there's anything we've learned in the 20 years since RE4, it's that escort characters *should never impede the player*.

Think of Alex from #HalfLife2 or Elizabeth from #BioshockInfinite. While they both help to a certain extent, they *never* get in the way of the player. They can't really die and never put pressure on the player.

Ashley on the other hand is *designed* to impede the player. Her entire purpose is to get in the way and have one more thing to worry about during gameplay. Every time the game separated the two of us I'd get anxiety. In any kind of firefight she somehow always manages to get between me and my target. I'm pretty sure I killed her more times than the enemies did.

In a pseudo-horror game that stress can kind of work, but it was also not what I was particularly looking for in this game and just detracted from the overall experience.
