This was an excellent article explaining the reasons why 'green infrastructure' such as the venerable are more important than ever to the future of city planning.

Also thanks to the Helen Clark foundation for authoring a report to try to drive policy changes.

Auckland has had some record-shattering climate-exacerbated flooding recently. One of the terms that keeps popping up is the concept of a 'sponge city' as a mitigation for flooding events.

Pretty much all (such as a ) act as a 'sponge' in this context. More bioswales everywhere, please!

Here's a great writeup of it by @Kaukapakapa_Kid greaterauckland.org.nz/2023/02

@lizzard @burritojustice We actually need some swales in my neighborhood, as we are on an incline that used to have a seasonal creek ... so first I would like to build a swale on our local slow street, and then I would like to take care of it.

San Francisco has had record levels of rain recently with severe flooding. Luckily they have hundreds of bioswales doing their bit to help out. Love it! Via @burritojustice

This is a "swale cell", which is like a but designed to catch excess stormwater from a gutter and direct it into a green and lush catchment area. Photo taken in Seattle by MIG

Great shot of a without any water in it. Can see the various components - curved 'U' shape, water retention dividers, overflow drainage, and lots of plants! Photo by RJR Engineering for the City of Fontana, California
