“If you try to change what is meaningful that has a different set of values or ethics, that’s treated as rebellion or trouble-making rather than a hygienic sense of innovation.” - The Manual of Design Fiction

Mhm. Why is seen as "innovation" because it doesn't challenge the values of capitalism, rather it accelerates it. But is rebellion or (good) trouble because it says "Sure, let's use tech, but and and anything that builds a more world."

Former is considering former executive as his pick for .

At least that’s how the is interpreting ’s recent comments to talk show host about the upstart candidate. But if you consider Trump’s comments another way, his praise for Ramaswamy’s “talent” functions as a way to disarm his opposition and incentivize an obedient pack of #2024 challengers.

We've got some more disease-resistant rice!

UC Davis and many international scientists have used CRISPR to create a new cultivar that is broadly resistant to many diseases.

The gene Resistance To Blast 1 (RBL1), when knocked out, improved resistance, but lowered yields 20 fold. So a mutated allele was made instead to keep the benefits and lose the downsides.

Seeing a lot of bad takes about why Amyris $AMRS declared bankruptcy, including from other founders.

"Cosmetics"
"Vertical integration"
"B2B"

No.

Amyris tanked because of bad management making terrible financial decisions.

Also, whether we like to admit it or not, economics still crush most things in . At least with the current approaches to commercialization.

Bees, like all other organisms, have a lot of parasites. And it is likely that these are the main contributors to issues like colony collapse disorder (CCD).

UT Austin scientists have targeted one such deadly fungal parasite, Nosema ceranae, and have genetically modified a bacteria commonly found in bee guts to produce an RNA interference system preventing the fungus from making spores.

More developments in making gene drives using CRISPR.

In order to combat Drosophila suzukii fruit destroying flies, NC State researchers have created a "homing" gene drive targeting the fly doublesex gene that, if inhibited, will result in sterility of the next generation.

Since the gene is so conserved, it could also be used as a target with other harmful insects.
