A blue jay who has a nest full of young ones in our courtyard stood at our tray feeder yesterday, casually cracking open sunflower seeds. A large pigeon watched impatiently below, but knew better than to interrupt a parent having a moment of indulgence to themselves.

It’s been an active morning among the #birbs here already today. Three hummingbirds were chasing each other around the feeder just outside our dining room window this morning when one ran into the window. It flew away without ever hitting the ground, so ok.

Then a few minutes later a pair of ravens started dropping something (either a rock or a pine cone) on he roof over our veranda repeatedly. This went on for three or four minutes before they left to do something else.

Tell me you don't love this grumpy-faced little nestling! It's a Northern Cardinal, so young that you can still see the tiniest bump of an egg tooth on its beak. One day, it will be a glorious red male or a glamorous tan-and-red female, but right now, it's just an insanely cute baby birb.

Rescued by the Center for Wildlife. It will be rehabbed and returned to the wild.
