Orange Lichen
What a vibrant shade of orange! This is a #downy #birch which is covered in several different types of #lichen. I suspect the #orange is a lichen too.

After a trying couple of weeks, I completed a personal project today. Posting as therapy.
It's an #electronics #workbench, replacing a crappy folding plastic table I'd been using. Surface is #birch #plywood, with #cherry #hardwood for edging and a back lip so I can't push stuff off the back by accident. The shelves/racks for equipment are made of the same plywood and cherry.
Computer on arm for reference materials, and swings out of the way.

Today, the description of a #NewSpecies of #birch from #China was published: #Betula mcallisteri (https://doi.org/10.3389/fpls.2023.1113274)
The species looks very similar to the widespread species Betula luminifera. In fact, using traditional characters to identify species, such as flowers, fruits or leaf, one cannot distinguish the two species. However, the #bark of the new species is peeling whereas B. luminifera has a smooth bark. Also, the bark does not smell when peeled (vs. fragrant).

#Oaks being wind-pollinated, loving to speciate and mingle, are more promiscuous. Their plastomes are entirely decoupled from speciation processes but, like in maples, tell us a lot about their origins in the dawn of the Cenozoic and where they have been.
All #Beech are old bastards. Literally. Totally anti-Hennig and anti-Mayr.
Equally wind-pollinated #Birch are not as well studied but there's a general coherence: their seeds can travel as far as their pollen.

Hiking on a #cinderCone I could hear the mountain "breathe" - distinct low booms every minute or so, as if hungry. The landscape there is eerie black with #birch #tree forests in stark contrast. I stayed late in the evening for a light show of lava and hot boulders.

This was my first plein air this year. I liked sketching birches with oil pastels and coloured pencils. Usually I use some paints but this time I grabbed graphic materials and it was awesome experience.
