Naively set up #Bird2 on my two VPS which are connected via Wireguard and set them each other as BGP peers.
The only thing that confused me intially was the error/warning
KRT: Received route 0.0.0.0/0 with strange next-hop <upstream router for my VPS>.
So I set both import and export to none in the kernel protocol (instead of setting a proper filter).
And voilá, my VPS are connected via #BGP, even if they don't have any routes to exchange :)
Navigating a BGP zombie outbreak on Juniper routers

One of the reasons why I love FLOSS. You can investigate and fix the problem yourself (with the necessary knowledge) if you look into the source code.
An alternative to routers would be OpenWrt, VyOS, bird2, OpenBGPD and frr.
