I still didn't have my birding lens, but since I had to meet someone near Central Park in NYC I did the best I could. So, by the west end of the Pool: two pictures of what I (or, more accurately, Merlin) thinks is a Canada warbler, and two of a black-and-white warbler.

Last for today: a pair of northern mockingbirds in Morningside Park, a block or so from the Columbia University campus.

Believe it or not, there was a time I wondered if I was ever going to see a double-crested cormorant. Well, today there was one at the Turtle Pond in Central Park and many at the North Gate House at the Reservoir. Plus, the usual black-crowned night heron at the Pool.(For some reason, the second picture of it strikes me as looking rather satanic, what with looking over its shoulder and the red eye…)

Last night we were talking about how we hadn’t seen Flaco hunt since he moved to the North Meadow when all of a sudden he swooped down, caught a rat, and ate it whole. He looks so pleased with himself.💕🦉 #birdcpp #birds #birdwatching #flaco

From my archives, for the Fourth of July, some bald eagles: Riverdale Park (12/8/2019, Bronx, New York), Riverside Park (1/24/2020, Manhattan, two blocks from my campus), Prospect Park (2/8/2023, Brooklyn, New York), and the Tracy Brook Wildlife Sanctuary in Massachusetts (4/30/2022). The last is my favorite: for the others, I was out looking for eagles, but for the last, I was photographing great blue herons when a bald eagle flew overhead

For (at least) the second year in a row, there is a peregrine falcon family in a church in the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The recently fledged juvenile in the first picture had just finished eating a pigeon, then took off. One of the adults watched all this from across the street.
Later, I went to Central Park where I saw a double-crested cormorant on a rock near the dock in the Turtle Pond.

An American robin in Riverside Park in New York City, gathering nesting material. This is rather late in the season for that—for a second nest and brood, perhaps?

🎉🎉🎉I was in Central Park even earlier than usual this morning and look who I ran into--a coyote! We stared at each other for a few moments before it trundled off. Isn't it beautiful? This is no more than 100 yards from NYC's iconic Fifth Avenue!🥰🥰🥰#birdcpp #coyote

I spent a little time with Flaco this morning in Central Park just after he finished his breakfast (see video below). He has found a daytime roost where he's unbothered by crows and blue jays, so he's eating well and getting plenty of rest! ❤️🦉❤️#birdcpp #Flaco

There was a great egret in the Salt Marsh at Inwood Hill Park in New York this afternoon. In turn: the egret caught a fish, the egret posing (it was low tide), the egret dunking its head going after more food (unsuccessfully, I think), and the bird with its feathers all fluffed up.

I managed to get to Central Park today for the first time in over a month. There were two black-crowned night herons in the Pool. The first, on the south side, is first all fluffed up and then walking to a new hunting spot. The second is on the north side. Later, both took flight at about the same time. In the Loch, I got a nice picture of a red-winged blackbird.

I haven't been able to get out with my camera, but I had a chance to today. So: here's a red-tailed hawk perched atop an American eagle atop a flagpole on the Columbia University campus, and a grey catbird in Riverside Park.

He sure loves heavy machinery. Flaco, the Central Park Eurasian eagle-owl, perched on the hopper of a soil screening machine with the arm of an excavator in the background.
