How in the world can you tell the difference between some of the various types of flycatchers? Trying to ID one from yesterday, and the Yellow-Bellied and Acadian look identical!

We have a new visitor to the backyard willow (which is within flitting distance of the feeder on our back deck)! Any help with ID?

The morning sun was behind the shot (I know, but I can't resist a hummingbird), but I tried to maintain the colors. I'm wondering if possibly juvenile (its tail was a bit thin/shaggy, and maybe those are starter-gorget stripes), possibly calliope (bc of size) or possibly rufous (bc of those tailcoat points)? I'm not awesome at #hummingbirds. 😅

#BirdID request: what's this one? Small, unusual colour. At least I think it's unusual.

I installed the #merlinapp for identifying #birds today. In under 2 minutes of Sound ID it found 6 birds around my garden, even with traffic and other noises in the background. 🤩

I confirmed those four birds where I'm very sure that they are correct.

It can play back the parts of the #recording that are from a certain bird, so that I can maybe learn the sounds myself. :masto_reading:

The only thing that's a bit annoying is that it displays the bird names in English. The whole app and the description texts of the birds (from #wikipedia) are in German, just the names of the birds (kind of the core thing here) are in English.

Now I just need something that identifies insects and spiders for me.

I know that these are some of the most common, boring birds available, but hey, we're in a large city here and it was just the first short test! 🏙️ 🏘️🐦🦆🦢🦅🦖

My #bird identification skills are certainly not up to scratch and despite my best efforts I still find it quite difficult. For a project I’m working on it’s something that’s going to be really important.

That being said…can anyone help me identify this little bird? I’ve narrowed it down to what I think is either a #WillowWarbler or #ChiffChaff? Or am I honking up the wrong tree?

Rosebreasted #Grosbeaks are great summer guests. I love their melodic songs and their mellow attitude. They are generally not one for lots of poses, they just sit down and chow down, but these portraits were fun because you see a bit more of their personality. To me, they always look a bit like they just woke up because they move slowly 😆 ⁠
