My identification skills are certainly not up to scratch and despite my best efforts I still find it quite difficult. For a project I’m working on it’s something that’s going to be really important.

That being said…can anyone help me identify this little bird? I’ve narrowed it down to what I think is either a or ? Or am I honking up the wrong tree?

This isn’t the momma from the nest of eggs in my shed, but he’s a male of the same type who has been hanging around just outside the shed. Any ID?

I finally figured out who’s been eating my peas!
I believe that’s a Red Finch 🪶
The plants have gotten massive from the constant rain, most are 9 feet tall 🙀 so I’ve got peas to spare, it’s interesting because the birds haven’t gone for them in years past.

Can anyone help me identify the foot of the bird leg that's being eaten by a ferruginous pygmy owl in this photo? It has an interesting talon that looks kind of like a seam ripper tool. Photo was taken in Mérida, Mexico.

The male Mourning (Zenaida macroura) is distinguished from the female mostly by being more colorful, with a blue nape and a pink breast. This might not always be noticeable and apparently there are studies showing that people do make mistakes on purely morphological cues.

Hello folks, any ideas as to what kind of lovely hawk this was, that visited the backyard? I'm currently debating between a juvenile Cooper's, Red-Tailed, or Red-Shouldered. I don't see hawks this close usually, it was very cool! And I had my camera! (These aren't the best shots, but I'm hoping they help with ID.)

Eastern-ish Coast, mid-Atlantic.

Nothing says Christmas like a Santabird. This is my first sighting of a -throatedSparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis). We only see them in Florida in the winter. This sexually monochromatic species like thick vegetative cover by water in the winter. This particular individual is a tan-morph, having a tan instead of white supercilium (stripe above eye).

Any bird experts know what kind of bird this is? It’s slightly bigger than a blackbird. I don’t recall seeing one before. Please pardon the picture quality. It moves fast and seems nervous.

@WilliamKretschmer that's quite the hat. I wonder what bird those wings came from - capercaille or turkey maybe?

That feeling when you see 2 birds fly over the backyard while you sit patting dogs and enjoying the first coffee of the day and you have to go get your bird book because they were odd birds then realise it's a good hour later and you've narrowed it down to 2 very different birds but now you feel like you'll never know the truth. That.

Juvenile crow (I think? Happy to be corrected) taken in Spring 2022, Malvern Hills.
I kept my distance and tried not to stress this baby.

It can be hard to differentiate between House Finches and Purple Finches, and when I had a Purple visit last year, I made this little chart to help with ID.
