Ok, I got it wrong, or whatever happened. I went through my soundrecording of today's 30 min. #backyardbirding thinking that I might have heard a Chiffchaff far away.
At the marked place in the recording I didn't hear it, but close to it I did find a faint recording of a yellowhammer flying over 🙂
The filtered recording got confirmed by BirdNet, Merlin and by a soundcloud recording.

So: september birdsound nr 5: Yellowhammer flying over.

eBird is running a competition in September where they ask people to upload at least 20 birding lists with 1 or more sound recordings.
I thought that it is a nice challenge, but I started a bit late. I am only at 4 recordings now (but I might have some more in Merlin).
This focusing on sound does produce some results however.

nr. 4: An alarm call from a Lesser Whitethroat from the garden. I actually gave the recording a 5/5.

Look at this guy! Turning his head changes how the light hits its neck feathers, making them appear to change color. It could not not share this!

Mostly a quiet morning in the Tijuana River Valley, with few migrants. A few highlights were Common Ground-Dove, a small flock of Solitary Sandpipers (not an easy bird in Southern California), and one of the locally introduced Black-throated Magpie-Jays. #birds #birding #sandiego #californiabirding #birdsofmastodon

#birding Saw a big bird with a long beak on the neighborhood lake when I was out for my evening hop. It's an American Pelican, the largest bird in Colorado. He was joined by a bunch of his buddies; really impressive watching them coming in for a landing, 9-foot wingspan makes them like 747s compared to the normal ducks and geese I see here!

Sorry about the crappy pics; I had only my cellphone with no zoom lens, and there were a lot of dark clouds so the lighting sucked too.

This intergrade male #NorthernFlicker has been around for several weeks and posed outside my window today. He shows a black mustache, indicative of some eastern Yellow-shafted ancestry, unlike most male flickers here which have a red mark. Flickers are more terrestrial than other woodpeckers - the wood chiseling bill is multi-purpose, and also works well for hacking hard earth in pursuit of ants!

Most mornings the last few weeks have awakened to the sound of distant resonant croaking - one or two #ravens patrolling the sky at dawn. Almost never later in the day. My head canon (which might even be true) is that they are taking advantage of early morning quiet to come down from the hills and check out the near suburbs unharassed, before zillions of rambunctious #crows come streaming out of their downtown #Portland night roost to take over the landscape.

Almost missed this beauty as I was driving around a nearby municipal southeast Michigan airport.

A few minutes later, the Red-tailed Hawk with prey in its talons, took off in flight over one of the airport buildings.
