The bird nest fungus is everywhere right now. I've found them in eight locations around the farm after twenty years of not finding any at all.

I've never thought of the common bird nest fungus as actually being common. The last time I spotted one was twenty years ago. Well, until yesterday it was uncommon. There must be some trifecta of temperature, moisture and growing conditions that has suddenly triggered a population explosion. I'm finding them all over the place.

They rely on direct hits from rain drops to splash the eggs out of the nest, where they will dry and then spread the spores.

Today I found bird nest fungus growing on a dead stalk of grass. The tops of the fungus have not yet opened. I brought the stalk inside to my macro focus rail to make some test images. Honestly, the images were not very interesting with the fungus caps not open. I returned the grass stalk to where I found it. I will wait for them to mature before photographing again.
