@matthewhowell oh and you'll need to vote in the #BirdOfTheYear to retain the right to live here 😉 https://www.birdoftheyear.org.nz/
The ABA Bird of the Year, a female Belted Kingfisher, put on a good showing at Alewife Brook Reservation today, though backlighting was tricky.

January: #birdoftheyear drawing #1.
This is my first attempt at drawing a Northern Pintail, the first bird I saw this year. I’m going to try drawing them once a month to stretch my skills.
This month, I went with pencil, pen, and marker on mixed media paper. #birdart
Decided to go out to the wildlife refuge. Heading out, didn’t see any birds until I got to the overlook. Peek through the binoculars, expecting to see a Canada goose, only to discover that my 2023 #birdoftheyear is the Northern Pintail!
Let the learning begin!

Disabilities sidelined me this year so I was thrilled to find a few lifers anyway. A little north of their range so not very common for #Ottawa.
I was charmed by the tuxedo, red velvet combination.

Bird of the Year is cool. I wonder if creating a localized equivalent, following the model of local elections in each area, could be a way to boost participation in the next local body elections?

> Bird of the Year is an annual mock election with a campaign that organically mixes community participation in memes with science communication to inform about the candidate birds and their habitats.

These five snuggling titipounamu siblings are history makers! They hatched last year on Te Ahumairangi Hill in Wellington and were the first titipounamu chicks in the area in over 100 years!

I’m sorry but there is simply NOT ENOUGH SUPPORT for the Pink Robin in the #BirdoftheYear race. Look at it. Just LOOK AT IT. It’s like a bird and a raspberry had children.
