I saw a potoo!!!!

A nocturnal bird that eats insects. During the day, it pretends to be a dead branch. I have no idea how Alonso saw it in the distance, behind several layers of trees and even less idea on how I managed to get a decent photo.

Manuel Antonio National Park, Costa Rica.

A painting I’m working on of a Black-bellied Wren (Pheugopedius fasciatoventris) which has gone through a lot of changes recently.
Like almost all Wrens this species sticks to understory and dense tangle in mid elevation moist forests and edges of Costa Rica, Panamá and Columbia.

Another highland endemic from the Talamanca Mountain range in Costa Rica: Long-tailed silky-flycatcher (Ptiliogonys caudatus).

They belong to the small family (Ptiliogonatidae) of only four species in three genera ranging from Central America to southwestern US. The species that reaches the deserts in the US is the famous Phainopepla.

Another highland endemic from the Salamanca Mountain Range in Central America: male Sooty thrush (Turdus nigrescens). This black male is quite similar i appearance to the European blackbird (Turdus merula).

High-elevation thrush species are often dark or black, which presumably provides some thermal advantages in these cold environments.

"You must have the bird in your heart before you can find it in the bush."

John Burroughs

The Blue-Gray Tanager
This is a common, restless and noisy species. Usually found in pairs, but sometimes small groups. It thrives around human habitation.

of the day is the Thick-Billed Euphonia. This is a female and can be pretty much in all of Costa Rica. Slightly skittish and camera shy, they are hard to photograph!

I just love the beautiful sunshine yellow colour though!

long-tailed silky-flycatcher (Ptiliogonys caudatus)
This painting has changed radically since I last thought it was finished. It’s a regional endemic of the cooler highlands of Costa Rica and Panama. I always associate this species with mists, dripping cloud forests and steep mountainsides.
They seem to like hanging out in treetops or fruiting trees similar to the Waxwings of North America.

I’m hoping to post a little more casually with this account and post videos, photos, links and articles as well as the paintings I’m working on.
This is one of one of our local Male Shining Honeycreeper (Cyanerpes lucidus) They frequent our patio feeder in southern Costa Rica at certain times of the year.
It’s gets pretty colourful when the Green, Red-legged and Shining Honeycreepers all show up at the same time.

Broad-Winged Hawk -

This stunningly beautiful, solitary hunter, is peculiar in its behaviour of migrating in massive flocks (Kettles).

They survive on almost no water getting what they need from their food!!!
